  2. While I certainly have some horror stories, something happened to me last week at work that was hilarious- So for context, I work at a fabric/craft store. It’s a Tuesday afternoon, around 6, we close at 9, and it’s super slow.There’s only 3 employees at the store. We’re pretty understaffed, so this isn’t unusual. Me, on the register, an older lady on the fabric cutting counter, and my favorite manager. We have multiple managers, but the one on duty is really chill and we have a lot in common, so we get along well. Here’s where shit goes down: My manager notices this dude come in who is high of his a$$, not uncommon for the area we’re located, and as long as he isn’t causing trouble we won’t kick him out ofc, especially bc high customers are actually some of the nicest people I meet. My manager lets me know, (and whispers a joke about how he wishes he where that high rn, fair-) mainly so I can keep an eye out and make sure this guy doesn’t knock anything over etc. half an hour passes, dude comes up to the register and sets a decorative basket people usually buy for floral arrangements down or shelf organization down, and its stuffed with jewelry making supplies. Strings of plastic or glass beads, charms, metal jewelry wire, just lots of shiny stuff. He starts wildly patting himself down, before saying “Oh crap, I forgot my wallet in my car… I’ll uh be right back?” And I reply saying “Yeah that’s fine, if your gonna be gone longer than like, an hour tho, we need your information for a 24 hour hold-“ but he’s already ran out the door… So, I put the basket behind the counter, and forget about it, 8:30 rolls around, and like I mentioned before, we close at 9. No one else is in the store, and I remember the basket, so, seeing as it’s been two hours and this guy hasn’t come back, I start to put the stuff away and clean up. That’s when I find…. Pokémon cards. A good 20 or so Pokémon cards, sitting in the bottom of the basket. 1. We don’t sell Pokémon cards… as this is a craft store? And 2. There good cards! A bit worn, but holographic, some EX’s, hell there was even a Snorlax GX (powerful cards for those who aren’t familiar) I call my manager over, and we both just burst out laughing. It was a long night, and this was by far the weirdest thing we had seen. So, I ask him what we should do, since we have no way of contacting this guy, and I kid you not, store policy says we have to put them in the safe, as they are collectibles, and an unknown persons personal belongings. We now have a ziploc baggie of Pokémon cards sitting in our safe.

  3. Not that long ago a lady called into the store from the parking lot. She was asking to have us pick out a few things for her and bring them out and she would pay over the phone.
    We're a small business and generally we don't take requests like that, but she told me she'd just gotten out of the hospital and couldn't walk well yet, and it sounded like the order would be small, so I said okay

    As I was picking out her stuff and trying to communicate about what she wanted, she started sounding irritated and acting like I was dumb. For asking questions and making sure I understood her correctly. And she didn't seem to get the idea of different communication styles so when there was a gap in communication she assumed I was being stupid or something and treated me as such. Like, um, that's not okay in the first place. Also I'm doing you a favor atm
    I was in my customer service persona but I had to hold back my tone

    Sometimes people who seem weird or rude have some kind of disorder/mental illness, or they deal with social isolation. (Like there's a semi-regular who once told me graphic details about his cat's death and I think he is one of those people). I try to be understanding toward that but it also sucks to be treated rudely when you're just behaving like a human trying their best to help someone else…

    On top of that the sexual harassment which can occur and everyday points of rudeness (which can be traced back to people forgetting the customer-faving employee helping them is a real person and not in fact a highly-advanced android) and it can really suck sometimes. One bad interaction can throw your whole day off. And you don't want the other normal customers to be affected bc not only is this your job but it's also not THEIR fault. But it can really wear down your mood/energy

  4. One of my coworkers once said that most customers fall into one of two categories
    1. I'm sorry for existing
    2. You're welcome that I exist

    The middle-ground is best for us customer service workers too! It's okay to ask for things without making yourself small or apologizing after every sentence. But also listen to our explanations and what we have to say, and reasons why we might not be able to honor your request
    I work hard at my job and take pride in my work (I work at a small, locally owned and operated store with cool products where they treat employees very well, so that helps) so I don't mind doing things for people as long as they ask politely and are understanding that we're only human, and depending on how busy we are, some things may take time. Just like we workers are people, you customers are also people. We see you as people and we want you to have a good day

  5. During the height of the pandemic I was fastidious about cleaning my till at the grocery store. I'd spray down and wipe the belt, the pinpad, the scanner, everything in between every single customer. So one day I had a lady who kept trying to put her stuff on the belt before I'd wiped it down so I had to keep asking her to wait, not yet please, I need to clean the till. When I'd finally cleaned off the till and gave her the go ahead, she was such a massive bitch to me about it. Like, ma'am this is for your own safety. Anyways, she ended up calling every complaint line we had so she could accuse me of not cleaning the pin pad, which got me kicked off of cash. Joke's on her but I'm much happier in stock, where I don't talk to nearly as many customers

Once an older lady came out of the bathrooms at the fast food place I worked at and told me "I know this is not something you can fix, but the door to the wheelchair stall doesn't close properly." And I just said something like "I'll be sure to let my manager know". I then took her order and afterwards she started talking about it again. She eventually got really mad at me for some reason (I wasn't even responding to the things she was saying at this point I was just nodding and listening politely) and she told me that "as an elderly lady I just get so nervous that someone might walk in on me" (it's a female only bathroom with a door and then two stalls- that DO close, but whatever). At that point I was getting slightly annoyed, but I pulled out my costumer service voice and said (politely might I add) "well, like you said there's not much I can do about it, I'll be sure to let maintenance know". Then she just, like, cracked and started yelling at me and her granddaughter and husband were just standing quietly in the background. I just turned around, bagged her fries gave it to her and said "have a nice day!" with a smile somehow- she said the "well I never line" stormed out and said "the door says give us 5 stars on google- we'll see about that." I was everything but mean to this lady and she said it wasn't something I could fix, but she still yelled at me. The icing on top was that my manager was standing in the kitchen the whole time, I even made eye contact with him while I was waiting for her food, and he didn't intervene. He just let her yell at me.

  7. I can confirm that I have never have any problems with my younger costumers. I have been however insulted, threatened and yelled at by sooo many old people. They feel entitled to say the absolute worst things and leave you in absolute shambles, all for a 10% reduction, that you end up giving them out of pure exhaustion.

  8. One time I had a lady get mad at me because we wouldn't accept her card. (Computer wouldn't process it.) When asked what type of card she had, she said doordash….. Ma'am, we don't use doordash. We do not mention doordash on any of our marketing. Our delivery drivers are employed through the small business I work at. Besides, the system we use LITERALLY cannot process it. Ten minutes later she called back to pay with a different card.

    Next day she called back screaming at cussing me out. When I tried to say anything, she would yell at me for cutting her off. I waited till she tired herself out and handed the phone to my boss. Closest I got to crying while working there.

    My boss took the phone, chewed the woman for yelling and cursing at me, chewed her out for yelling at him, refunded her money, and told her to never call us again.

I heard that the phrase "the customer is always right" is actually an incomplete quote which actually says "the customer is always right in their choice of style", referring to their choice of clothing. I think the guy who originally said it was the owner of a hat store or something way back when.
